Daddy’s Daughter

Richard Price had a problem, and that problem’s name was Valerie.

It was a, by now, familiar problem. One doesn’t enter a relationship with a woman who already has a teenage daughter and not face… difficulties. Let alone how to relate to the young woman. But he’d accepted that when he married Chelsea Mackinera. He considered Valerie a… challenge. But not one worth focusing on.

After all, he had a lot of other things he would rather focus on. His legal business in Newhaven absorbed him for the most part. He was one of four practices in town, and one of the few that focused primarily on common law. It was a lot of work, and he had a number of clients everyday. As for Chelsea, she took up the remainder of his time. He did love her, but again, there was the daughter. He knew Valerie didn’t like him. He was the intruder. The interloper. The alien to a life the young cheerleader had been leading.

So he did what he could. Which was nothing.

If Valerie wanted nothing to do with him, he could live with that. He let her do as she pleased, secure in the knowledge she would, inevitably, move off to college. Figure out where her life was going. Probably experiment a bit with girls or what have you. Richard went to college. He knew how things went. And while she was gone, maybe he could finally get some work done and develop further his relationship with Chelsea, which had, somewhat, chilled in the last few years. Again, going back to Valerie.

It was hard, he was sure, for a mother to see her daughter and her new husband not get along. He loved Chelsea, but she was… not terribly clever. He was willing to admit that. She had an earnest sort of helplessness about her when it came to these issues. She was more accustomed to going out to California or the tanning salon if things started to overwhelm her. Out of sight, out of mind. Which hadn’t dealt with the problems so much as delayed them.

Richard sighed and took off his glasses, rubbing his brow. He wondered if that had produced the problems he now faced with his step daughter. Possibly it had been his negligence. If so, he supposed it was time to correct it.

He’d first heard about Valerie’s change of character from one of his clients. Douglas Kith ran a clothing shop in town that Valerie frequented.

“Richard, is Valerie… uh… going through a phase?”

“What do you mean?” he’d asked.

“Oh, nothing.”

And Richard had left it at that.

Then he’d actually seen his step daughter leaving the house, and he understood.

The first time he’d been too gobsmacked to say anything. He’d been making coffee when Valerie flounced into the kitchen. Richard was used to his step daughter wearing little at the best of times.

Nothing at all was new, though.

The stir stick had frozen in his coffee. Richard’s eyes had grown large. “Valerie…”

“Oh! Hi daddy!”

Richard actually felt the gears in his head skip.
